There are three tasks each week:

These are time sensitive. You do not receive credit if you write them after the deadline each week.

First, there's a blog entry (about 250 words) which will have you respond to a hopefully thought-provoking question. Each week, you must do the blog entry with enough time left in the week to be able to enter into dialogue online with your classmates. Write, reply, write more, reply more, and then write and reply more.

Second, there's a reading. There’s no blog entry associated with this. Just read.

Third, there's a written response to the reading. Your reading and writing on the blog must be completed by the SATURDAY (by midnight) of the week in which the reading falls. This entry should be a long paragraph. YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESPOND TO OTHER STUDENTS' PART THREE EACH WEEK.

WEEK SEVEN READING

The Tipping Point...no, not the whole thing. This week, read the introduction and the first three chapters.
Gladwell will describe three types of people in these sections: Connectors, Mavens, and Salesmen.

Keep in mind what you will be writing about this week in the next section of the blog.

As you go through the Gladwell reading this week, who(from your own life) stood out in your mind as a Connector, Maven, or Salesman? This person might be someone you see on tv or someone you live near. It may be your best friend, or it may be your sister. Describe the person and elaborate on what makes that person either a  Connector, Maven, or Salesman. (It is entirely up to you whether or not you name the person)

  1. After reading the characteristics of a Salesman, only one gentleman came to my mind: Shane. Shane is one of the team leaders at the Target that I used to work for. Not only can this man talk, in general, but he talks a very good talk. It seems as though he knows everything about anything. When I read that Salesmen have powerful negotiating skills but they make you want to agree with them. This is exactly what Shane can do and does. Whether it is with his work at Target, meeting women, talking about politics or telling a story about his past, he can make you change what you initially thought to what he thinks. His gestures and tone make you feel comfortable, rather than overbearing and demanding and that is another characteristic of his which relate to the Salesmen. For example, when our Target store was just opening, he would tell employees that he was a security guard for Michael Jackson. He told stories about his encounters with the King of Pop, and some of the court issues at the time. The way he spoke about this just made me not want to believe because it sometimes seemed phony and over embellished. But one day, he showed a picture of him at court beside Michael Jackson, and sure enough it seemed believable.
