There are three tasks each week:

These are time sensitive. You do not receive credit if you write them after the deadline each week.

First, there's a blog entry (about 250 words) which will have you respond to a hopefully thought-provoking question. Each week, you must do the blog entry with enough time left in the week to be able to enter into dialogue online with your classmates. Write, reply, write more, reply more, and then write and reply more.

Second, there's a reading. There’s no blog entry associated with this. Just read.

Third, there's a written response to the reading. Your reading and writing on the blog must be completed by the SATURDAY (by midnight) of the week in which the reading falls. This entry should be a long paragraph. YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESPOND TO OTHER STUDENTS' PART THREE EACH WEEK.

WEEK SIX BLOG ENTRY

How are your other classes going? I know, it is off topic and perhaps even silly...but you have developed an online community here, so let's here about some aspect of your studies that have nothing to do with 305.

No length requirement on this one...just write!

  1. Currently I am enrolled in 20 units this fall, along with volunteering as the photo editor for the runner on campus. At the moment, I am in two english classes.

My American Lit, class is going well. We just finished reading Revolutionary Road. Quite the fabulous novel. Our next is the crying of lot 49. I am looking forward to it. I am also taking an Acting 1 class and we are now in preparation for our big final scene. So there is a whole bunch of stuff coming up with that: line memorization check, character interview, first showing and then final performance. It's a great assignment, I love theatre it's my favorite thing to do. She decided to pick the scenes for us and find something she thinks would challenge us. She gave me a comedic scene because I always perform something dramatic so she feels this will be a good challenge.

Then I am in a Stats class for non math majors. It is going really well. I am actually enjoying math, which never happens.

It doesn't even feel like week 6 of the quarter, it's crazy. I can't believe how fast time flies by when youre busy.

I hope everyone else's quarter is going good!

    3. I wish I could handle that much stuff in my schedule! I can barely handle classes alone.

    4. I wish math in general was as easy to wrap your head around as stats is. I remember doing a statistical survey in my last stats class prior to coming here. My group decided to try doing a telephone survey, which was a bad idea if you wanted to get actual results.

I love math, I would its my major. But I am more of a calculus person. I didn't quite enjoy stats. And your right. this quarter is going by too fast. I am so excited for winter vacation. I need it. It's been a busy quarter.

  2. I am taking 13 units and I would agree, time does pass quickly. I have found Cal State Bakersfield does require more reading than I am used to, but I have stepped out of my comfort zone. I have enjoyed the exposure to reading other than text books. I am taking"the meaning of death" which is very interesting and has put a new perspective on the 2013. I look forward to seeing everyone in November.

    1. Oh I absolutely agree with you on the reading part of it. I was never good at or willing to read but over time I have learned to like reading. I am still a slow reader. It took me till this week to finish the book. With full time work and full time kids, housework, and school work it is difficult for me to read a book in a week.

  3. I am taking 15 units including this course, an upper division accounting course and a finance course. I feel like I am juggling all 3 pretty well considering I also work 32 hours, volunteer weekly at my daughters' school, manage their soccer team and try to fit in time with hubby.

I appreciate that this course allows at least 5-6 days to complete the weekly writing assignment. This is actually my first online class and I was really dreading it because I am more of a hands on/note taking student but since I enjoy reading and love writing this has gone surprisingly well.

One of my other courses is a hybrid and the instructor posts quizzes online Friday and they are due Sunday night. The quizzes (ranging from 1-3) can be the two upcoming chapters or any of the prior ones which makes it difficult to study prior on exactly what I will be quizzed on. So my entire Friday evening and night is usually dedicated to review for that one course.

I sit down every Sunday and work out my entire coming week for scheduling my entire life. I know that sounds a bit dramatic but at this point in my hectic life and close to finishing up school I cannot afford not to set a schedule. This quarter hasn't left me very much social time but I have an amazing husband and awesome friends that don't mind waiting until Thanksgiving.

Hope the rest of you are doing well and happy studying!

    1. Wow, that is a handful. I can only imagine how you feel at the end of the day. I am glad to hear things are going well with school this year. I have to admit, I need to start with planning my entire week, but I usually rest on Sundays! But I'm glad you shared because I'm going to buy a calendar and do the same. I usually am very stern and cancel everyone out of my life when school begins, but lately I've been involved with friends and family.

Thanks, for sharing and passing along the idea!!

My best friend is taking that class and he wasn't very happy with his first exam score. Good luck you are very inspirational. I can't imagine myself being able to attend school and having children and on top of that being very involved with them.

Blanca- I am taking ACCT303 and yes I have Professor E. He is a really, really great guy. I expected to do better on the exam but that just means I need to study harder for the next one and he offered extra credit so I am all over that.

Felix- Yes, I do! I can hear the pumpkin beery calling my name :)

Once again, thank you for all the support. You guys rock!

  4. My studies are going well. I am taking math stats and I don't know if I prefer stats or other algebra style math. The main problem is word problems more than anything. I just need to get rid of it as soon as possible and it will complete the requirements for graduation and post graduation plans to another university. My other courses are fairly simple and straight forward, as long as you stay on top of them. I am taking EDTE 416, which is in a subject for students wanting to be teachers, which I am not, but took it because of the great student reviews of the teacher. Then I am also taking a medical terminology class, not necessary for anything, but it is preferred for post graduation career goal. Since, I have been in the medical most of my career life, and most recently an EMT, it is pretty simple, but can be difficult if not already accustomed to root words, prefixes, and suffixes in the medical field. I was not sure how this quarter would be, since I have been out of college for several months, and dealing with employment, housing, and having our first daughter just turning 1 the other day. Just seemed a little overwhelming. Though, things haven't gone the way I had hoped, it seems like things happened for a better reason, and school has really helped a lot to occupy my time and keep me focused on the goals. I can say CSUB is probably the best college I have been to out of the 4 I have attended, just wish they had better financial aid. I do admit that this class, since it is English, is my most enjoyable class to do.

    1. I have taken the medical terminology online before and I really enjoyed that class. I see what you mean about being difficult if you are not accustomed too medical root words and/or suffixes, I actually learned a great deal of new medical words. Overall I found it very helpful since I'm following a nursing career.
Hopefully things begin flow and adjust a lot better for you!

    2. Wow! I can't imagine having gone to four different colleges! Although I suppose it makes sense as you pursue multiple/progressing degrees. Just keep your head up, we're halfways through the quarter!

    3. I have never liked word problems in math. I found Stats to be interesting though, and useful. I loved medical terminology, took it in high school and college when I was doing prerequisites for nursing. I have been to 7 different colleges. My favorite junior college was Mendocino College in Ukiah, CA.

  5. This quarter is going well, I cannot complain. I really do enjoy this class. In addition, I am actually switching my major to Communications. The reason being, I find myself more excited, enthused, and I really enjoy the topic as a whole. I was planning on moving to Sonoma County in January, but things got in the way so I will be finishing my year here at Cal State, but I intend to apply for CSUN and hopefully attend in the fall of 2014. I am finding myself slacking off a bit in my economics class, I just feel like I can take another economics class for another quarter. Overall, this quarter is going swell.

I hope everyone's year is going well!

    1. Are you taking macro- or micro-? I had to take macro-econ for a requirement for the honors program and I hated that class. It was awful. Mostly because I'm not very into politics or the way the country is run and money and all that (which is awful in it's own way, I know). My friend just started at CSUN and she seems to like it. Good luck with that!

    2. Jeannie- No I am not, but I could not stand that class either. I know what you are going through, not a fun or exciting class at all. I've completed that class a few quarters ago. Thank you, what friend? If you do not mind me asking.

  6. I feel this quarter is flying by so fast.Currently I’m taking just three classes, Modern art, Pathophysiology, and this English class. So far it seems that I have been doing pretty well on my classes the one that has me on my feet the most is pathophysiology. I find myself studying almost everyday for this class, recently we just had a test and I have another one next week I kind of just want to get it over with. It requires some study time but I love the class. I like learning how the body works and what causes it to fail. My Modern art class is very enjoyable too I recommend it for anyone needing to fulfill a theme three class. You learn lots of interesting stories about the paintings and architecture you will look at. It is not a difficult course I like it.
Hopefully everyone is doing good to and goodluck to all on midterms and final exams!

    1. Jeanette, you're right. This quarter is going by so fast. It is good that you study for your Pathophysiology class everyday. The more you look at and evaluate the material, the sooner it will be stored in your long-term memory. You're taking quite a heavy load and I wish you well in life and your classes.

    2. That is what I love about attending CSUB, it being on the quarter system and they go so fast that it doesn't give you time to slack off.

      Delete
    3. Pathophysiology! That is some cool and hard learning stuff. I hated trying to remember everything possible for each body system, on the broad level to the molecular level for treatment. I can say having field experience helps so much with learning this stuff. I am an EMT and I learned so much in the field versus the book and figures. But it is very demanding, but fun in the end knowing what's going on with the body. Good luck and hope you pass the class with a good grade and move on. It feels great to move on from a difficult class!

  7. My quarter is going relatively well, considering I didn't want to come back this year! Last quarter kicked my butt and it made me really not want to come back. Since I had already gotten my classes for this quarter and I was so close to finishing I decided to stick it out. I'm taking two online classes, which I am way more into that I thought I would be, and one on campus. I'm a really self-led learner and enjoy working at my own pace, so these online classes are really working out for me. I have this online class as well as Psyc 312 online, which is social psyc. That class is going really well, probably the best I've had in a while. It's very well organized and very straight forward. I'm enjoying this class a lot as well. I wasn't really sure what to expect, although I guess I should have expected it to be as it is. I like that we weren't reading textbooks about writing and grammar and all that. I think that's what I expected a little more. Thank goodness that's not it! My on campus class is probably my toughest class. It's a phil class for my minor, I think it's political philosophy... Or philosophy in politics. Something like that. Even though it's my minor, I'm just not as philosophical as I thought I was I suppose. I made it my minor because of the critical thinking class, which is 102 I believe? I really enjoyed it and loved the professor, so I made it my minor. I have her for this class, which is nice because I know her teaching style and how she works. It's also nice to have the professor who inspired my liking for philosophy for my last required class for my minor. All in all this quarter is going pretty well, just coming to the final stretch! I have four classes left and I'll be outta here! My goals this quarter are to just pull through, get good grades, and get my grad check in so I can finish on time! Good luck to everyone on midterms and in your other classes!

  8. This quarter started out a little tough but I think it is starting to balance out although it is half way over. I am taking 15 units while also working 35 hours a week at Starbucks. I am taking RS301 Hebrew Bible, RS313 Christianity, as well as this class. I really didn't need to take either RS classes but I thought those both sounded pretty interesting so I thought, why not? I am a Christian but I thought taking the Christianity class would be awesome because saying you are a Christian is pretty broad because there are so many different denominations who believe things to be different. Taking this class I thought would just teach me about the basics of how it came about and around what time and how and just the initial when, why, how kind of thing. Well, it is a lot different than I thought, but I really am enjoying the class and I love that our textbooks explore different perspectives of the class and allows us to ask questions and really discuss what is going on. Hebrew Bible on the other hand was not what I was expecting! I don't know anything about the Hebrew Bible really so I signed up for the class because I thought it would be so interesting to learn about it along with maybe a few words in Hebrew. No. The first text we read was about the history of ancient Israel and Judah and the material went right over my head but the cool thing about the class, which is what I love the most about it, is that it is so small we all just sit in a circle and discuss the textbooks in depth to get a good understanding of it all. Both classes are taught by Dr. Vivian and I think he is so awesome! I love the style of the classes and I feel like those discussions are pretty cool just getting personal and hearing everyone's opinions. Sometimes it gets tough between all the classes because there is so much material to read and between class and work I don't find that there is enough time to do it all so it can get pretty stressful pretty quick. To keep me balanced I make sure I put EVERYTHING in my planner and stay up to date with the syllabuses as well as find time for myself to relax and de-stress as best I can. Being balanced is tough too, especially when it assignments are due around the same date and there just isn't enough time I find myself forgetting about this class and that's what is tough about online classes. There is no instructor to kindly remind you about assignments or when they are due, you have to take more responsibility to check and be on top of things. If anyone is interested in taking religious studies classes I definitely recommend taking them with Dr. Vivian.

    1. Britny I have to write everything down too. Are the religious studies classes 2 unit classes? I am currently taking RS 465 with Dr. Betty, the meaning of death, I do enjoy the professor but at times is over my head.

    2. Hey Tammie! No the two are both 5 unit classes. I heard about 465 and I thought about how interesting that topic would be! I wrote it down to take it possibly next quarter. What kind of things do you go over in class or what text books do you guys go over? I don't know if I mentioned it but the Hebrew Bible class was way over my head but then we moved onto another textbook and I started to jump on track!

    3. We had to rent or by 5 books and have to read many course reserves. We study the 5 main religions: Christian, Islam, Jewish, Mormons, and eastern religion we haven't talked about yet. Mostly lectures with 12 quizzes midterm and final. We have watched several videos it is interesting.

  9. My classes are going better than expected, but they're no walk in the park. I'm just now getting into the routine of taking the quarter and semester systems at once (I'm currently taking classes at both BC and CSUB). Besides this course, I'm taking Classical Social Theory, Introductory Spanish III, and a two-unit lecture class called Meet the World. I needed to be taking twelve units at CSUB for some scholarships that I had applied for, and it seemed like the most logical choice to fill in my schedule with two units that would not affect my GPA (it's credit/no credit).

This class is the most structured class I am taking right now. I am thankful to have deadlines that are written down and clear examples to follow for the writing assignments. I took a critical thinking through literature course last semester, and I believe it thoroughly prepared me to write about almost anything involving literature. This class is definitely the most enjoyable as of yet.

At the moment, my school plans are pretty up in the air. I'm trying to figure out a new minor, since the concentration I had originally chosen requires me to take courses that are never offered here and aren't scheduled to be offered, either. I can't pick my classes for next quarter and Spring until I figure out my plans for a new minor or concentration, so that has been occupying a lot of my free time today. Thank the gods above that my advisor is awesome and is working with me to possibly create an interdisciplinary minor with the courses that were part of the original concentration I had chosen. I'll just have to wait and see, which is not something I am good at!

  10. As always, it seems as though bad things keep happening. The school year started out so promising. My little girl started school and I continued my education through CSUB. One of the first things that happened for my daughter is that she started learning to spell colors and read colors. This was (and is) really exciting for me because I've been reading to her since she was born. She knew her alphabet at 1 1/2. Due to my having a lot of time on my hands at the beginning of her school year, I got started on teaching her how to read. I want to continue doing that, but with us both in school and me doing volunteer work, I do not have enough time to do this anymore. My classes take up most of my time. I'm taking Anthropology of Native North America, a Child Development class, and a music class. The anthropology class is very reading intensive, but I feel it's going well. Perhaps I just need to learn to manage my time a little more efficiently.

    2. Hey Whitney, this is my first year attending college with a new child. Time doesn't seem to be your friend, does it? It seems easy at first, but then classes get slightly harder, more projects, and more time being spent. This sadly cuts down on family time. Anthropology of Native North America seems pretty neat. I don't remember which Anthro class I took, might have been cultural, but I found it very interesting, plus the teacher I had was awesome and laid back. Good lucky trying to find the balance with personal life, family time, and school time. Just takes some time.

  12. I am currently taking 15 units. I am used to taking about 20 but with the difficulties I have been having in math because this the third time me taking math 221 I decided to scale back. I just went to see my advisor today and found out that I am so ahead of the game that even with me taking 3 courses for the remainder of the year I will still be able to graduate in the spring 2014. I just hope I can pass this quarter and the remaining two with taking math for each quarter. However, I have been kicking butt this quarter in math so hopefully I can keep it up. My other class is a liberal studies and this writing class and those classes I am enjoying very much.

    3. Angel: So far, I'm enjoying Cal State. Compared to BC, it seems like there is a greater benefit in cooperating with your classmates in order to get a good grade in any given course, especially in study groups. Sure, I pretty much have no social life aside from my classmates, but it just feels good to know that there are people that are competent and willing enough to help you out if you ask.
As far as what I plan to do with my major, I was originally looking into civil engineering jobs. However, a majority of them involve large scale projects, and personally, I feel that I work better in smaller places. That said, I been thinking about mechanical engineering, as I enjoy being hands-on with projects and experiments.

Tammie: The finals come pretty quick, but that's to be expected when you have 10-week quarters, haha. The lack of a social life does make you pretty lonesome in the quarter, I haven't seen my friends in a week.

I was hired at the same time I was to start classes, but I managed to be able to arrange my courses to fit my schedule and stay above half time. I am taking another online course which is in nursing. It is a management course and its easy but hard at the same time. The terminology is confusing and I wonder how much of it I would actually use when I'm done with it. 18. This quarter and the last were relatively low stress for me. I'm only taking one course due to working 40 hours a week. I plan on picking up the units next quarter to.........wait for it............two classes! I was full time for about a year and got burnt out, so I took a year off and am glad to be back. I only have about 8-9 classes left, so I'm looking forward to finishing up. The only issue is that a lot of courses are offered once a year.

    1. Hey Nycole, I could definitely relate on juggling work and school. It is really tough because I have to work about 35-38 a week while taking 15 units as well. Being able to focus on only one class must be nice! Only 8-9 classes left? You're almost there! Keep it up!

  19. Other than this course, which I am enjoying, I am taking an Art history and Sociology class. The classes do need seem difficult, but they do require a large amount of reading. I work a lot but I take full-advantage of the 24 hours throughout the entire day.

Good luck to everyone this quarter.

Ps. . . since we got off topic with this blog I have to say something: next time any of you (21+) are at Bj's restaurant off of Stockdale Hwy, try a beer called "Harvest Hefeweizen"!

    1. Felix,
haha, I am going there later this week and I'll definitely have to try it! I am glad your classes are easy, it makes for a relaxing quarter. Good luck with everything!

    2. I knw what you mean about taking full advantage of every hour in the day. Sometimes i will be up at the crack of dawn before work to do homework, do more on my lunch, and then go to class after work. It is quite a feat!

    3. FELIX!
YOU BRING UP A GREAT POINT! I don't want everyone to go out and have a drink, but you should all be establishing more MARGIN in your lives. Me too, truth be told. We are far too busy and need more time to contemplate and to think about the big questions of life like, lemon or orange with that hefeweizen? Seriously, everyone, strive for more margins in your life!

  20. This is the only class I am taking this quarter. This is my last course that I need for my
bachelors in registered nursing. I don't have any courses other than this class. I have been
working a lot. I'm also trying to get in shape. I'm trying to eat a more healthier diet and
sleeping more regularly. Since I'm a nurse its hard to do since i do get night shifts from time
to time. I try to find fun things to do once in awhile but I haven't been going out recently. I'm
also preparing for the holidays coming up. All in all things have been going okay for me.

  21. This quarter seems to be flying by. All of my classes seem quite repetitive, since all my classes have been on Education. The three of my classes this quarter all overlap in everything we are studying and I am not sure why they have made three different prerequisites for it. I guess it means I should do great in the classes. :] Besides my classes, I have been working everyday as a substitute teacher, and it has been stressful. I never realized how hard of work it could be substitute teaching. Overall, it is quite a relaxing quarter compared to my quarters at Cal Poly. I usually took 20-22 units a quarter and did not have an ounce of time to relax...

    1. Breanna i have to agree with you this quarter is flying by as well as each month can't believe it will soon be Christmas. What grade do you substitute for? I have also substitute before and its not easy especially when you have to deal with bad behaviors.

  22. Well, I have never been this busy in my life. Yet, I feel a happiness that I didn't think possible. I work 24 hours a week. I have a job on campus. I am very involved within my sorority and I am taking 15 units: pre calc, auditing, and english 305. My math class is a breeze. I feel that I am talented and fit for this major. Auditing, is a whole different profession even though I do enjoy both majors equally.

    1. Hi Blanca! So what are you majoring in? Math and some kind of auditing? That sounds interesting! What kind of auditing are you doing? And what sorority are you in? I kinda wish that I had joined a sorority but with 15 units and working part time with 35ish hours a week is a lot for me, I don't think I would have time to be any more involved in anything else. How do you balance it all?

  23. This quarter is going better than expected I am taking 12 units. Even though I only have one face to face class and two online classes there is a lot of reading. I also have community hours to do for two of the CAFS classes that I am taking. I am doing my community hours at the Bakersfield homeless shelter, I am happy that I chose the shelter to do my community service because I get to help serve the lunches for those in need. Not only am I helping at the homeless shelter I am also helping out at an elementary school by going in to a classroom and helping out students who don’t speak English. Not to mention I am still working part time with the school pathologist, taking 12 units, and doing community service is a bit exhausting because there is a lot of reading to do, but once I am done with all this I will feel accomplished.

  24. I am taking 15 units this quarter. Besides this class, I am also taking Business Administration 301 and Management 302. I really like that all three of my classes have work that I have to turn in to receive credit. My BA class is my most difficult class. This quarter seems to be the hardest for me. I recently got married, and I am still trying to balance school, work, and being a wife. I'm not much of a planner, but I am starting to see that when I plan out my days I tend to get more things done. I still have a lot to learn and experience.

    1. Alexandria, I hope you aren't taking BA 301 with Dr Flanagan, don't get me wrong he is an excellent professor and really knows his stuff but he can be very tough. A lot of the Business classes and business professors are pretty tough but they are well worth it, and just a little hint of advise, try to get the most out of each class, because you have to put everything you've learned in all your business classes together in senior seminar.

    2. I agree with Gabe. Dr. Flanagan is a neat professor but mid-way through the class all the concepts begun to sound the same to me. I struggled at the end. I would recommend flash cards and partnering up with a classmate. Good luck and happy studying!!

  25. This quarter I am enrolled in 3 classes, and all are 5 units each. Aside from this class, I am enrolled in a CAFS course and in Photography. This quarter has been going relatively smoothly. I have already encountered outside of school difficulties, but that is life. I have been doing my best in my classes and since it is my last quarter, it is an absolute must that each class I take, I pass.
Each class has its own unique challenges. Most recently with English, we had to read a book within a short amount of time and a synthesis was followed shortly after. I consider my photography class my “distraction” class. Although we have assignments due every week, it does not really feel like assignments because it is not from a book, and we have to take photos. It is just really refreshing and different from most of my classes. In my CAFs, I am doing so much reading, writing, and doing reflections. This class requires the most of my attention it seems.
I am so surprised with how quick the quarter has gone, because soon finals will come up and everyone will be in panic mode and I hate that feeling!

  26. This quarter has proved to be the toughest yet for me. I am taking 20 units in order to graduate next quarter as well as working part time. It’s a lot of work and keeps me constantly busy, trying to balance school, work, and my personal life. Overall I quite enjoy the classes I am taking this quarter. I am taking BA 490 which is Business Senior Seminar, and is quite fun. Most of the class we are playing an online game in groups, controlling a shoe company for 5 years, and we have to make all the business decisions for the company such as how much to sell for, where to sell, where to manufacture, keeping investors happy and so on. I am also taking a Human Resources Management class which is quite interesting, and am taking another management class which is a lot different from most classes. For instance, the professor had the students put together the syllabus as well as decide how we would be evaluated for the course. In the end we decided to have no big midterms or finals, instead, we have group assessments which are really fun. Lastly I am taking this course which I really have enjoyed. I do not have time to ever read anything besides text books, so reading the Tortilla Curtain, and getting lost in the story and connected to the characters was a blast for me.
